Harp Returns: Redshirt freshman Chase Harp, who left the Kentucky footballteam on Monday while announcing his intention to transfer, has returned tothe team, Coach Hal Mumme has announced.
Harp considered transferring when it became unlikely that he would win thestarting quarterback job. He has returned to the team and will play tightend during the remainder of the spring. Harp practiced on Wednesday andcaught several passes at his new position.
Kelly Sidelined: Sophomore strong safety Anthony “Champ” Kelly sustained astrained hamstring muscle during Monday’s practice and is sidelined for twoto three weeks, meaning that he could miss the remainder of springpractice. Kelly had been working with the first team defense, as returningstarter David Johnson has been playing cornerback during the spring.Sophomore Patrick Wiggins was the first team strong safety duringWednesday’s practice and was very impressive as he made three interceptions.
Zurcher the SEC Student-Athlete of the Year: Strong safety Jeff Zurcher, asenior on the 1998 Kentucky football team, has been named the H. BoydMcWhorter Southeastern Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the1998-99 school year, the conference office announced Wednesday.
Zurcher will receive a $10,000 scholarship, provided by BellSouthCorporation. He has received numerous other academic and community serviceawards, including first-team GTE Academic All-America and the WalterDriskill Scholarship by the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame.
Zurcher graduated in May, 1998, with a 4.0 grade point average and adouble major in English and advertising. He is slated to finish hismaster’s degree in diplomacy in December in UK’s Patterson School ofDiplomacy and International Commerce.
