NASHVILLE, Tenn. – University of Kentucky men’s tennis player Patrik Johansson won his opening singles match at the Southeastern Conference Indoor Championships in Nashville, Tenn., on Friday.

Johansson defeated Tennessee’s Adam Carey, 7-4 (4), 6-3. He advances to the second round tomorrow, where he will face the winner of the match between No. 5 seed Marco Baron of Mississippi State and Jeffrey Bergman of South Carolina.

UK freshman Reven Stephens fell to Vanderbilt’s Brad Hambrick, 6-3, 6-2, in his opening match, while Tennessee’s Mark Fitzpatrick defeated UK’s Claude Grady, 6-1, 6-2. Stephens and Johansson face the Ole Miss duo of Vikrant Chada and Anders Stenman in the first round of doubles play on Saturday.
