LEXINGTON, Ky. – With inclement weather threatening throughout the day, the first two rounds of the Johnny Owens Invitational came to an end with defending champion Toledo safely in first place.
The Rockets shot out to an early lead in the first round when they finished three strokes ahead of then second place Miami (Ohio). Toledo stretched its lead in the second round by firing a team total of 288 strokes to finish the day 12 stokes ahead of the field. Day one individual leader Kyle Voska of Miami (Ohio) used a second round of five under par to leap frog Kentucky’s Mike Cassity and Michigan’s Michael Harris for the top spot.
The Wildcats finished the day in fifth place with a team total of 597, 18 strokes off the leader.
Leading the way for UK was Wes Furnish’s fifth place tally of 145 and Cassity, who fell to 25th after a second round score of 79. Other Wildcat scores include Ron Layman who shot a 75 in both rounds of play tying him for 33rd place. Jeremy Langley hit a two-round total of 156 placing him 70th, and Ryan Loghry hit a two-round total of 157 settling him in 74th.
The Johnny Owens Invitational will continue Saturday with play beginning at 8:00 a.m. at the Kearney Hill Golf Links.
