A six-run seventh inning by the Mississippi State Bulldogs (21-4, 4-3 SEC)proved costly for the Kentucky Wildcats (7-14, 2-6 SEC) as they droppedSaturday’s game, 10-5.
Kentucky held an early lead until the fourth inning when Mississippi Statetied the score, 1-1, on Cliff Wren’s solo home run. UK responded with onerun in the fifth and sixth innings before allowing the Bulldogs to take thefinal lead in the seventh.
Leadoff singles by Daron Wright and Chris Curry followed by a RBI single byChris Lotterhos tied the game at 3-3. Mississippi State took the lead onWren’s second home run of the day, a three-run blast over the right fieldwall. The Bulldogs picked up runs in the eighth and ninth innings as well,holding a 10-5 advantage over Kentucky.
The Wildcats did not go quietly, though, scoring two runs in the bottom ofthe eighth inning and threatening in the bottom of the ninth, ending thegame with the bases loaded.
Three Kentucky hitters extended their hitting streaks in today’s game.Breck Price currently has a 15-game hitting streak intact. John Wilson hasreached base safely in nine consecutive games, and Kyle Hooker has afive-game hitting alive.
The Wildcats return to action Sunday, March 28, at 2 p.m. to close out theseries with Mississippi State. Sophomore Brandon Webb will take the moundfor the Cats in the rubber match of the weekend.
