GAINESVILLE, Fla.-The 17th-ranked University of Kentucky men’s tennis team fell to the 21st-ranked Florida Gators 5-2, Sunday. The Wildcats (15-8, 3-5) needed the a tiebreaker victory to capture the doubles point after splitting matches at number one and number three doubles. At number three, UK’s junior Patrik Johansson and freshman Edo Bawono defeated Florida’s El-Sawaf/Whigham 9-7. UK lost the doubles point at number two when Florida’s Adcock /Glover defeated UK’s 32nd-ranked duo, Marcus Fluitt and Johan Hesoun,9-8(4).
In singles, the oldest and newest members of the UK squad tried to rally an overall win for the Wildcats. Senior Cedric Kauffmann prevailed over Florida’s Jon Glover at number one, 6-4, 6-3. Kauffmann now holds a four-win streak and all of the wins have been over SEC competitors (Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Vanderbilt and Florida) bringing his overall individual record to 30-12. Newcomer Edo Bawono defeated Florida’s Amr El Sawaf, 6-1, 6-1.
UK will return home to the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Center for the last three home matches of the regular season. The Wildcats first opponent will be Tennessee on April 8 at 4:30 p.m.
