LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Kentucky women’s tennis team won its opening match ofthe season on Saturday, topping the Tennessee Volunteers, 5-4, in theHilary J. Boone Tennis Center on the UK campus.
The match was nip and tuck throughout, but UK’s Brooke Skeen and ChristySigurski pulled out a 9-7 win over Candy Reid and Alison Ojeda of UT in thefinal doubles match to give the Cats the win.
Kelly Brown and Massoumeh Emami also grabbed a doubles win for the Cats,and Sigurski, Brown and Skeen claimed singles victories.
With the victory, UK moves to 1-0, 1-0 SEC, while Tennessee falls to 1-1,1-1 SEC.
“This is a real tribute to our seniors,” Coach Mark Guilbeau said. “Theyhad lost to Tennessee three years in a row, and to pick up this win is ahuge accomplishment for them.”
The Wildcats return to the courts Feb. 7, when Miami of Ohio and TennesseeChattanooga travel to Lexington to face UK in back to back matches.
