Tony Tzouanakis, a 1999 graduate of Lexington’s Paul Dunbar High School,has signed a national letter of intent to attend the University ofKentucky, UK Coach Don Weber announced Monday.
Tzouanakis, the 1999 Kentucky High School AAA State Discus Champion, set anew AAA state meet record last season with a throw of 179’05”. Theprevious record, set in 1977 by Brian Greshel of Valley High School, hadstood for 22 years.
“We are extremely pleased to have Tony select the University of Kentucky,”Weber said. “He is a very motivated athlete who loves to throw and liftweights. His passion for training, combined with his athleticism and 6’4″,240-pound frame, will enable him to develop into a national-class thrower.In addition to competing in the discus, we anticipate Tony will compete inthe 35-pound weight throw during the indoor track season and the hammerthrow during the outdoor season.”
Since the state meet in June, Tzouanakis set a new personal best discusthrow of 186’04” at the 1999 USA Track & Field Junior Olympic RegionalChampionships in Fairborn, Mich. With the toss, Tzouanakis claimedfirst-place honors and shattered the Kentucky High School “all-classes”discus record of 185′ 02” set in 1984. Tzouanakis will next compete in theNational USA Junior Olympic Championships in Omaha, Neb., July 27 – Aug. 1.
