LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Kentucky junior varsity football squad debuted in itsthird season on Monday at Commonwealth Stadium, handing Maryville College a45-0 loss.

Over 20 Wildcat varsity players dressed out versus the Fighting Scots asfreshmen Artose Pinner and Jonathan Chapman each charted two touchdowns apiece in the first half to pull away early. Redshirt freshman Edgar Ganttalso helped the Cats dominate the Scots in the first half, catching threepasses for 40 yards and one touchdown.

Varsity backup quarterback Mike Scipione started out the impressivescoring drive for the Cats, completing his first eight passes in the firstquarter. The redshirt freshman completed the night throwing 10 of 11passes for 174 yards and one touchdown. Quarterback Mark Perry was also ontarget, completing four of five passes for 57 yards.

“I am just so proud of our players,” JV Coach Sonny Dykes said. “Ithought we played with a lot of heart and class. I must thank Coach HalMumme and Mike Major for allowing some of the varsity guys to play tonight.

I felt we got some really good looks at some of our younger guys.”

Kentucky’s defense held Maryville to only five first downs and 67 yards oftotal offense, including a mere 14 yards rushing. The defense alsoaccounted for two safeties in the second half. The defensive unit was ledby freshmen walk-ons Micah Terry of Louisville and Ray Khatir of BowlingGreen. The Kentucky natives each tallied eight tackles and Terry went onto register two quarterback sacks.

“Coach Rob Manchester really had the defense ready tonight,” Dykes said.”We don’t have a whole lot of practice time and I thought our defensereally came out and executed.”

The Cats garnered 422 yards of total offense with 270 yards passing and152 yards on the ground. Freshman wide receiver Ernest Simms led thereceiving corps, catching four passes for 73 yards while Pinner led therunning game with six carries for 75 yards. UK averaged 8.0 yards per playon offense.

The junior varsity squad will travel to Georgetown on Thursday, Sept. 23to face the Georgetown Tigers at 7 p.m., in its second game of the season.
