Boyce scores game-winner for Wildcats in double-overtime victory.
LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 31, 1999) — The 14th-ranked Universityof Kentucky women’s soccer team capped anoutstanding regular season on Sunday with a 1-0double-overtime victory over the visiting19th-ranked Michigan Wolverines on Senior Day atthe UK Soccer Complex.
Freshman forward Keri Boyce scored thegame-winning goal at the 112:07 mark in thesecond overtime as UK (16-2-1) claimed its 15thstraight win of the season, the second longestwinning streak in the country. Boyce’s game-winnerwas her second of the weekend and her sixth of theseason, breaking the UK school record forgame-winning goals in a season.
The Cats got their revenge from last season’s finale,a heartbreaking 1-0 loss in Ann Arbor, as theWolverines netted a 15-yard shot with just fiveseconds remaining in the match.
UM (13-5-1) pressured the Cats from thebeginning but with 30 minutes remaining in thesecond half, UK took control of the tempo. In thefirst overtime, the Cats had two breakaways butwere unable to convert on either attempt.
Sophomore Annie Gage won a ball back on theright side of the goal and found Boyce at the top ofthe Wolverines’ box. Boyce found an opening infront of the goal where she fired a seven-yard shotinto the upper left corner of the net for the win. UKgoalkeeper Beth Wells posted her seventh shutoutof the season, the second highest single-season totalin UK history.
“I cannot say enough about this team,” UK coach Warren Lipka said. “Theyshowed so much fight and determination, and their incredible hard workshowed in the end today. We don’t have long to enjoy this one because weopen the SEC Tournament on Thursday.”
UK’s four seniors, Hope Deutschle, Brooke Hergesell, Allison Peppers, andDeanna Stayton were honored before the match in a special ceremony.
The All-Tournament team consisted of UK’s Boyce, Peppers, Wells, andJen Reese, along with Kacy Beitel, Shannon Poole, and Carissa Stewartfrom UM, Nicole Lee and Dana Larson from Minnesota, and Missy Kellerand Melissa McGee from Alabama.
UK returns to action at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 7, when the Cats faceGeorgia in first-round action at the SEC Tournament in Nashville, Tenn.
