University of Kentucky women’s soccer coach Warren Lipka has been namedthe 1999 SEC Coach of the Year and forward Keri Boyce has been named SECFreshman of the Year, the league office announced Wednesday. In addition,UK placed three players on the All-SEC first team and one on the second team.
Lipka has guided the Cats to a 16-2-1 overall mark this year in leading UKto a second-place finish in the SEC Eastern Division and the second bestoverall record in the SEC. In 1995, Lipka was honored as the league’s topcoach.
Forward Annie Gage, midfielder Jen Reese, and defender Allison Peppershave been named first-team All-SEC by the league’s coaches. Boyce was namedsecond-team All-SEC.
Boyce was voted as the SEC’s top freshman by the league’s coaches. TheBirdsboro, Pa. native, is second on the squad in scoring with 12 goals and28 points, while tallying four assists. On Monday, Boyce was named the SECPlayer of the Week for the second time this season. She scored thegame-winning goal in both of UK’s two victories over the weekend, a 2-0 winover Minnesota and a 1-0 double-overtime victory against 19th-rankedMichigan, breaking the UK school record for game-winning goals in asingle-season with six.
“While I am honored to receive this award, the credit goes to our teambecause they have worked so hard this year and have just done a tremendousjob on the field,” Lipka said. “Keri is such a talented player and shereally has been one of the keys to our attack this season. She has playedgreat all year and is deserving of this award.”
Gage, a senior from Westerville, Ohio, leads UK in scoring with 14 goalsand 36 points this season, both UK single-season records. Reese, a juniorfrom Nokesville, Va., scored three goals and has tallied three assists forthe Cats this season. Both Gage and Reese are first-time All-SECselections. Peppers, a senior from West Chester, Ohio, has tallied a careerhigh four assists this season. The last two seasons, Peppers has been namedto the All-SEC second team.
Nine Named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll
Nine UK players were named to the 1999 SEC Women’s Soccer Academic HonorRoll Wednesday by SEC Commissioner Roy Kramer. Seniors Hope Deutschle,Brooke Hergesell, Allison Peppers, and Deanna Stayton were named to theAll-SEC Academic Honor Roll along with juniors Jaime Dellbringge, HeatherPielage, Jen Reese, and Beth Wells and sophomores Melinda Buemi and SuzieLedzianowski.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must have a 3.0 gradepoint average for the past year or for her career or be a sophomore inacademic classification and have 24 semester hours countable toward a degree.
