LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) – Tayshaun Prince scored 19 points, while JamaalMagloire had 17 point and 13 rebounds as Kentucky opened its preseason schedulewith a 73-66 win Tuesday over the California All-Stars.
Magloire, the senior center who nearly left school last summer to enter theNBA draft, has looked sharp in the Wildcats’ early tuneups, particularly onoffense. He scored 33 points in a public intrasquad scrimmage last weekend andwas 6-of-12 from the floor on Tuesday with six blocked shots.
Last season, when he was suspended twice and played mostly a reserve rolebehind Michael Bradley, who has since transferred, Magloire averaged sevenpoints and 4.4 rebounds per game.
Prince, a sophomore swingman, was 8-of-14 from the field, grabbing fiverebounds and making three assists.
Former Washington player Mark Sanford had 23 points and 14 rebounds to leadthe All-Stars, a team of former college players who stayed even with Kentuckyfor a half.
The All-Stars led 35-34 at the half after former Cal State-Northridge playerKeith Higgins connected with his brother Derrick Higgins on an alley-oop astime expired.
The Wildcats came out gunning in the second half and outscored the All-Stars18-6 in the first eight minutes.
Prince, Saul Smith and Desmond Allison each connected on 3-pointers, andfreshman guard Keith Bogans made it 52-41 after he grabbed the rebound of amissed Magloire free throw and took off from just inside the free throw linefor a layup that drew roars from the Rupp Arena crowd.
Smith, the coach’s son who will take over from Wayne Turner as Kentucky’spoint guard, finished with 10 points.
Derrick Higgins had 12 points for the All-Stars, who were beginning a10-game preseason tour against college teams.
