ATHENS, Ga. — The University of Kentucky?s three remaining players in thesingles draw of the ITA Region III Championships were eliminated from thetournament in third round action on Friday. Carlos Drada, Johan Hesoun and EdoBawono each lost their morning matches at Magill Tennis Complex to completetheir fall season.
Drada, the 27th ranked player in the nation, won the first set against TiagoRuffoni of Auburn in a tie-braker, 7-4, but lost a close 7-5 decision in thesecond set before falling 6-4 in the third. The loss drops Drada?s fall recordto 10-5.
Hesoun, No. 54, lost to Dylan Mann of Florida in straight sets, losing 6-2,7-6(6). Hesoun finishes the fall with a 10-6 record. Also falling to a Gatorwas Bawono, ranked 82nd, who ran into the tenth-ranked player in the country,Justin O?Neal of Florida. Bawono lost his third round match with O?Neal instraight sets, 6-0, 6-4.
In doubles action, the UK doubles team of Bawono and Drada upset the33rd ranked tandem of Fitzpatrick and Handoyo of Tennessee, 8-2, in the secondround. The Wildcat duo continued their strong play into the third round wherethey met up with the Mississippi State team of LeBelicard and Ruiz. In a backand forth match, Bawono and Drada pushed the Bulldogs to the brink, but lost a9-8 (6) decision.
The team of Hesoun and Gustav Pousette are still rolling through thecompetition as they won their second round match, 8-2, against Goetzman andWinnig of UTC and then their third round match, 8-3, over Lundberg and Viljanenof Tulane.
Hesoun and Pousette are the lone UK competitors remaining heading into thetournament?s third day as they will play Carey and Parsons of Tennessee on Saturday at 4p.m. ET for a semifinal berth.
