COLUMBIA, S.C. – The UK men?s swimming and diving team defeated SouthCarolina 137-103 Saturday afternoon at the Carolina Natatorium, while the UKwomen?s squad defeated USC and Arkansas, 124-102.
Junior David Tweedie captured the 500-yard freestyle (4:34.07) and1,000freestyle (9:26.93), while freshman diver Clayton Moss won the 3-meter eventand placed second on the 1-meter.
Shaun Zitani added a first-place finish in the 50 freestyle (20.75) andanchored UK?s winning 200 freestyle relay with Tweedie, Aaron Workman, andMacon White (1:23.60).
On the women?s side, junior standout Melissa Olson won the 200individual medley (2:04.01) and 200 butterfly (2:03.46). The Charleston, W.Va., native, added a second place finish in the 200 breaststroke (2:20.29).
Senior All-American Annabel Kosten won the 100 freestyle (50.69)for theCats and swam on both first-place relays — the 400 medley relay (3:52.69) andthe 200 freestyle relay (1:36.15).
?The main thing we wanted to do was swim fast because we?re going intothe conference meet next month, and I think we did that,? UK coach Gary Conellysaid. ?The fact that on the men?s side they only had 12 swimmers and we had 13made it fun being a close meet with rivalries in each event. Melissa Olson wasawesome and did a real nice job in her events today.?
The win improved the women?s record to 5-0, while the men?s squadpushedits record to 2-3 overall.UK returns to the water at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 22, when the Cats play hostto LSU at the Lancaster Aquatic Center.
