Kentucky men, women each finish fourth.

AUBURN, Ala. (April 1, 2000) — Rebecca Wedel set the University of Kentucky record in thehammer throw Saturday, April 1, at a Southeastern Conference Quad Meet inAuburn, Ala.

The junior’s heave of 159-01.00 surpassed the previous top school mark,which she also set two weeks ago in Miami, by 6-05.00. Her throw was alsogood enough to claim second place in the event.

For the second time in as many meets, senior Matt Kavanagh claimed an NCAAprovisional qualifying mark in the hammer throw with a toss a 208-06.00.Currently the UK record holder in the hammer, Kavanagh threw the secondfurthest distance in school history Saturday improving on his seasonal bestby eight inches.

Also claiming second place points for the Wildcat women were juniorMichelle Williams (110-meter high hurdles) and Shevan Threats (long jump).Williams’ time of 13.78 was a seasonal best. Both her finish and Threats’leap were good enough for fourth on the UK All-time lists.

Senior Beth Burkett and freshman Semidele Adeagbo contributed points forKentucky’s cause with third place finishes. Burkett established a seasonalbest mark in the javelin throw with a toss of 147-11.00, an increase of10-09.00 from her previous best. Adeagbo claimed the three spot in herfirst attempt in the triple jump this season with a leap of 39-00.25.

For the men, senior Jeff Limpert finished .01 seconds away from an NCAAprovisional time in the 800 meters crossing the line in 1:48.81. His timewas not only a personal best, but also third best in school history. Alsoin the 800, Chad Johnson set a UK freshman record by more than a secondwith a 1:49.27 third-place finish.

On the day, Kentucky’s athletes notched 18 top-five finishes while alsoimproving on seasonal bests 20 times. The final team standings hadFlorida’s women claiming first with 205 points, 28 points ahead of Auburn.Tennessee took second, while UK finished fourth. The Tennessee men,however, took top honors with 205.5 points, followed by Auburn, Florida,and Kentucky.

The Cats return to the track when they travel to Austin, Texas, for theTexas Relays on April 6-8.
