Quarterback Decision Made but Not Announced: Following Mondayafternoon’s practice at Nutter Training Center, Coach Hal Mummeconfirmed that he had made a decision regarding the starting quarterbackjob but was not ready to announce whether junior Dusty Bonner orredshirt freshman Jared Lorenzen had been chosen.
Asked how his evaluation of the game film from Saturday’sscrimmage affected the decision, Mumme replied, “The big grade is howmany times the quarterback puts you in the end zone. Dusty got us there10 times.” The UK offense totaled 11 touchdowns during Saturday’sscrimmage and Bonner led 10 of the 11 TD drives.
Mumme also said that he was pleased with the improved play ofthe offensive line and the progress made by the centers’ shotgun snaps. He noted that guard Omar Smith, guard Josh Parrish, center NolanDeVaughn, center Keith Chatelain, and running back Artose Pinner hadplayed well. Among the wide receivers, Mumme lauded the performances ofNeal Brown, Gary Hughes, Derek Abney, and Quentin McCord.
Robinson Status Uncertain: The playing status of UK widereceiver Jimmy Robinson is uncertain after Robinson re-fractured hisleft humerus (upper arm bone) during Saturday’s scrimmage. The injury isin the same location as the fracture Robinson sustained last summer thatcaused him to miss the 1999 season.
“This is disheartening and his situation is really clouded,”Mumme said. “It is very sad because Jimmy worked so hard to get back.I just got a report and the highest number I heard (regarding thepossibility of return) was 50 percent.
“I haven’t had a chance to talk to Jimmy yet and I have to seewhere he is on this. He has the rest of his life to think about.”
Bond Moved to Defense: There was one major position change inMonday’s practice. Redshirt freshman Octavius Bond has been moved fromwide receiver to cornerback.
“Octavius can run and is a contact player,” Mumme said of themove. “Cornerback is one of the hardest spots to fill. He is too goodan athlete not to get on the field.”
