LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Kentucky women’s golf team has received an endowed scholarship gift from Alma Jo McGuire of Lexington, the first endowed scholarship for UK women’s golf. The Atkins-McGuire Golf Scholarship is established in honor of McGuire’s father, Frank Atkins, and in memory of her husband, Andrew T. McGuire. The scholarship will be awarded by selection of the head women’s golf coach and will be given to a student-athlete who: a) is eligible to compete based on rules set up by the University of Kentucky, the NCAA, and the Southeastern Conference, b) will represent themselves, the University, and the McGuire-Atkins family in exemplary fashion, and c) shows promise to play golf at an elite level.
“I was extremely pleased when Alma Jo McGuire contacted me with her intention to honor us with a golf scholarship,” Coach Bettie Lou Evans said. “This is our first endowed scholarship, and we’re very appreciative of her interest in our program. Alma has been a longtime friend and supporter of the University in addition to her involvement with our program.”
