Women’s hoops squad looks to hand Georgia its first SEC road loss of the season.
(Feb. 16, 2000) — The University of Kentucky women’s basketballteam plays host to No. 2/3 Georgia on Thursday,Feb. 17 at 7 p.m. in Memorial Coliseum for theSoutheastern Conference Game of the Week. TheSEC matchup will be televised live on Fox SportsNet South but is not available in Lexington.
The Wildcats (12-10, 4-6) snapped a five-gamelosing streak with a 73-71 win over South Carolinaon Sunday in Memorial Coliseum. The Cats nowlook to break another streak. Georgia enterstonight’s game riding a 10-game win streak after a84-61 win over the Lady Gamecocks last week inAthens. The Lady Bulldogs (24-2, 9-1) are 17-1when playing away from Athens, Ga., 5-0 on theroad in Southeastern Conference play.
Last season UK defeated the Lady Bulldogs,80-76, in Lexington, marking its first win over UGAsince 1994 and Coach Bernadette Mattox’s firstwin over a ranked opponent and former coach/bossAndy Landers. The Cats hold a 6-5 advantagewhen playing Georgia in Memorial Coliseum.
“It looks like Coach Landers has another Final Fourclub,” Coach Mattox, Georgia’s first femaleAll-American and Academic All-American, said.”In fact, they are a much better team than when webeat them here last year. They have more weapons,they play great defense and they are playing with alot of confidence.”
Mattox played two seasons under Landers(1979-81) and led the Lady Dogs in scoring (20.6),assists (4.6) and steals (4.2) as a junior. She stillranks seventh all-time for scoring average (15.0).
Leading the Cats in scoring this season issophomore forward LaTonya McDole. The Dayton, Ohio native averages12.3 points per game. She netted a team-high 16 points on Sunday and hascharted double-digit scoring in five straight games. Senior center ShantiaOwens is Kentucky’s rebounding force, averaging 7.4 rebounds per gameand 1.7 blocks.
The Lady Bulldogs are led by twin sisters Kelly and Coco Miller, whoaverage 15.8 and 14.8 ppg, respectively. Tawana McDonald follows in thescoring column with 13.0 ppg.
