Men’s soccer to play the winner of Northern Illinois-Marshall.

DeKALB, Ill. (Nov. 7, 1999) — The University of Kentucky men’ssoccer team picked up a convincing 3-0 win overWestern Michigan on Sunday to advance to thefinal of the Mid-American Conference Tournament.

UK’s Giovanni Fernandes opened the scoring forthe Cats in the 13th minute, blasting a shot past theBronco keeper off assists from Jason Bell and RobFrey. The Wildcats struck again before the breakwhen Bell found the nets off an assist from ChrisMcAlpine at 23:38.

Kentucky freshman Chris McDaniel closed out thescoring at 49:59 off a pass from Ilkka Jantti to pushthe final margin to 3-0.

UK outshot the Broncos 12-6 and Kentuckykeeper Brian O’Leary needed just two saves topost his eighth shutout of the year as UK upped itsrecord to 12-6-1.

With the win, UK will host the MAC Championship next Friday at 7:30 p.m.at the UK Soccer Complex against the winner of the NorthernIllinois-Marshall semifinal.

“We were able to come up here and take care of business,” UK Coach IanCollins said. “Now we just have to get ready for the final.”
