LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Kentucky men’s soccer team came back to post a 2-1 overtime victory over Marshall to preserve the Wildcats, unbeaten Mid-AmericanConference record.
After a scoreless first half, the Thundering Herd’s Eric Vought netted a goal in the 57th minute to take a 1-0 lead. UK (11-3-2, 5-0) tied the score at the 77:48 mark when forwardSean Mondelli put in a shot off assists from Rick Dengelegi and Billy Dwyer. The score remained knotted at 1-1 until UK midfielder Lee Baker scored off a free kick by Mondelli atthe 102:50 mark.
The Wildcats head into the last week of conference play with sole possession of first place in the MAC, while Marshall (12-4, 4-1) drops into a tie for second with Akron.
“I’m very happy with the poise and concentration our players showed tonight,” UK head coach Ian Collins said. “There was no question we deserved to win.”
The Wildcats had 16 corner kicks to Marshall’s zero, and UK outshot the Herd 14 to 10.
Kentucky attempts to pad their conference lead when they take on Akron on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the UK Soccer Complex. If the Cats come away with a victory, they will do noworse than a share of the regular-season MAC title.
