Women’s basketball easily handle Eastern Kenutucky in 87-47 romp.
(February 17, 1999) — The University of Kentucky women’s basketballteam defeated Eastern Kentucky, 87-47, inRichmond on Tuesday, charting its 17th overallwin for the first time since finishing 17-11 in1993-94.
The Wildcats (17-9, 6-7 SoutheasternConference) dominated the entire game versus theLady Colonels (11-13, 8-8 Ohio ValleyConference), leading 39-15 at the half. UKallowed only 18 EKU baskets in the entire game, holding the Lady Colonelsto shoot 18-of-55 from the floor. The Cats hit 31-of-65 from the field for47.7 percent as Tiffany Wait led the Cats with 15 points and LauraMeadows netted 12 points. Twelve of the 13 players scored for Kentuckyas the Cats played their last regular season road game.
“We played welldefensively tonight,” UK Coach Bernadette Mattox said. “We worked onour transition game and our defense in practice this week and it paid off. I’mvery proud of our kids and their performance tonight.”
Three Wildcatscharted career-highs versus EKU as junior Erica Jackson recorded acareer-high 10 steals while freshman Tanesha Seaton and junior Rae Keithposted six points apiece for career-high points. Charlotte Sizemore led EKUin scoring with a game-high 16 points while Cathy Dues followed with eightpoints.
The Cats lead the series with Eastern Kentucky 21-8 and holds a two-gamewinning streak versus the Lady Colonels. UK will play host to SouthCarolina in its last regular season home game on Sunday, Feb. 21 at 2 p.m.in Memorial Coliseum. The Cats will honor lone senior Jaye Barnes in SeniorDay ceremonies and will give a away $500 in a random drawing.
