The University of Kentucky women’s basketball team avenged last year’stwo-point loss to Dayton with a 73-67 victory on Saturday, Dec. 6, inMemorial Coliseum.
UK forward Jaye Barnes netted a career high 27 points and pulled down agame high six rebounds to maintain the Wildcats home court winning streakof three games. Barnes was hot from both the field and the line, hitting nine of12 field goal attempts and nine of 10 from the charity stripe. Freshman guardLaura Meadows followed with 13 points, her sixth double-digit effort inseven outings this season. UK (3-4) led by as many as 11 points with sevenminutes remaining before Dayton (2-3) rallied behind Christi Hester’s 26points. Hester, a Louisville native, charted nine points in the final sevenminutes, including two free throws to tie the game at 67 with 1:42 left in thegame before UK’s center Kim Denkins drove the lane to put the Wildcats upfor good.
Saturday’s win raises Kentucky’s advantage to 14-4 in the all-time seriesversus Dayton. The last time UK defeated Dayton in Memorial Coliseumwas on Dec. 15, 1990 when the Wildcats won 95-68. UK has little time tocelebrate its second consecutive win as they face No. 22 ranked WesternKentucky on Monday, Dec. 8 at 7 p.m. in Bowling Green, Ky.
