LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Kentuckywomen’s basketball team lost its third straightSoutheastern Conference game on Saturday, falling76-49 to Mississippi.
The Wildcats (8-7, 1-3) hit 21 of 62 shots (33.9percent) and netted only 1 of 13 shots (7.7 percent) fromthree-point land in their first loss at home this season.Tiffany Wait, the only Wildcat to score in double digits,led UK with 13 points before fouling out with a minuteremaining.
“I am very disappointed in our team,” Coach Bernadette Mattox said. “Wedid not come to play tonight and Ole Miss did. You cannot win a ball gamewin your post players don’t score.”
Ole Miss dominated the defensive boards, outrebounding UK 26 to 13.Offensively, UK outrebounded Ole Miss 18-9 but a tough Lady Rebeldefense held the Wildcat’s leading scorers Jaye Barnes and Laura Meadowsto a combined 13 points.
Barnes, charting her first single digit showing in nine games, scored all sevenpoints of her points in the second half. Forward Kim Denkins also remainedscoreless in the first half as Kentucky trailed 34-20 to start the second half.
The Lady Rebels, (8-9, 1-3) scored 21 of 45 (46.7 percent) shots from thefield and 29 of 36 shots from the free-throw line (80.6 percent) to pick uptheir first SEC game of the season. Three Ole Miss players posted doublefigures as Tarsha Bethley led all scorers with 21 points. The Wildcats will beback in action on Wednesday, Jan. 18 in Cincinnati’s Riverfront Coliseumwhen they host the Lady Tigers of Louisiana State University at 6:30 p.m.The UK men’s alumni team will face Athletes in Action immediately followingthe UK women’s game.
