NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Vanderbilt’s Katie Peifer and Laura Koerner each had a goal and an assist to lead the 23rd-ranked Commodorespast the Kentucky women’s soccer team, 3-1, Sunday.

With the loss Kentucky falls to 8-9-1 overall, 6-2-0 in the SEC. The win improved Vanderbilt to 11-6-0 and gave the Commodores theSEC Eastern Division championship with a 7-1-0 conference mark. Vanderbilt took a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute of play when AustaHelgadottir fired a 25-yard blast past UK goalkeeper Carrie Kuhnell. The Commodores took a 2-0 lead six minutes into the second halfwhen Peifer scored on a pass from Koerner.

All-SEC forward Kim LaBelle brought Kentucky to within 2-1 five minutes later, scoring on a from a pass from defender Allison Peppers.However, despite a flury of Kentucky offensive chances, the Wildcats could not add another goal. Koerner scored in the 60th minute to putthe game away, giving Vanderbilt the 3-1 victory.

“Both teams had chances today, but we could not convert and they did,” UK head coach Warren Likpa said.

The loss most likely gives Kentucky the Eastern Division’s No. 3 seed in the SEC Tournment where the Wildcats would face the No. 2 seedfrom the West. However, the Wildcats could earn the No. 2 seed should Florida lose to both South Carolina and Auburn.

The Wildcats continue action next weekend as they travel to Chicago to face Northwestern on Friday.
