Defeat Mississippi State and Ole Miss
Forward Jen McMaster had a goal and an assist to lead the University of Kentucky women’s soccer team to a 2-1 winover Ole Miss on Sunday. The win improves the Wildcats to 7-8-1 overall and 5-1 in SEC play.
McMaster put UK ahead in the eighth minute of play as she took a pass from Carrie Staber and scored from six yardsout to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead. Kim LaBelle scored what would prove to be the game-winner in the 32nd minute,converting a McMaster pass from five yards out after Jennifer Hyngstrom made a through pass to get McMaster free onthe right wing.
Ole Miss fought back in the second half when Ashley Newport converted on a one-on-one opportunity against UKgoalkeeper Carrie Kuhnell to bring the Lady Rebels to within 2-1 in the 64th minute. However, Kuhnell and the UKdefense would hold off Ole Miss the remaning 25 minutes to preserve the victory.
“We played another solid game today,” Kentucky head coach Warren Lipka said. “We have to continue that effort nextweekend when we play Arkansas and Vanderbilt. We still have a chance to win the Eastern Division, but to do so wehave to play well next weekend.”
In Friday’s game, Carrie Staber had a goal and an assist to lead UK to a 4-0 win over Mississippi State in Starkville.LaBelle and freshmen Jen Reese and Jamie Dellbringge each added goals, while freshman Annie Gage registered anassist. Goalkeeper Carrie Kuhnell picked up her first shutout of the year with the win.
Kentucky returns home next Friday as the Wildcats play host to SEC rival Arkansas. The game will be part of adoubleheader as the men’s team plays immediately following the women’s game at the UK Soccer Complex.
