LEXINGTON, Ky. — Kentucky midfielder Brooke Hergesell connected on a penalty kick with three minutes to go in regulation to give the UK women’s soccer team a 3-2 come-from-behind winover Tennessee at the UK Soccer Complex, Friday night. With the win, Kentucky improves to 3-5-1, 2-1 in SEC play, while Tennessee falls to 5-3, 1-2 in the conference. The win was Kentucky’sfirst at home this season.
Tennessee opened the scoring just 10 minutes into the second half as Heather Redecker’s 40-yard shot got past UK goalkeeper Carrie Kuhnell. UT went up 2-0 just five minutes later when DebbieMarkovich scored on a one-on-one shot from 17 yards out.
Kentucky would battle back, however. All-SEC forward Kim LaBelle took a pass from Debbie Blake and scored her fifth goal of the year from 12 yards out to bring UK to within one at 2-1in the31st minute. Jamie Dellbringge scored the equalizer for Kentucky just eight minutes later, her first career goal, lobbing the ball over UT’s Sarah Shivley from 25 yards out – tying the game at 2-2 athalftime. The game appeared to be heading into overtime before Hergesell’s penalty kick, her second this season, gave UK the win.
“We’re pretty happy to get this win,” Kentucky head coach Warren Lipka said. “We got behind 2-0 pretty early on, but our girls didn’t hang their heads. They kept playing hard and stayed in thegame.” Kentucky continues action Sunday afternoon as the Wildcats play host to SEC rival Georgia. Game time is set for 12 p.m. at the UK Soccer Complex. The match is part of a soccerdoubleheader, as the UK men’s team faces Belmont at approximately 2:30 p.m., Sunday. All fans with a ticket stub from the Kentucky-Florida football game will be admitted to the matches for only$1.00.
