Wildcats find second loss on road
(Sept. 2, 2000) — The University of Kentucky volleyball team (1-2) was defeated in four games by the Virginia Cavliers on Saturday, Sept. 2 in its final match of the University of Virginia Tournament. This was the first meeting between the two schools.
Virginia (2-1) downed the Wildcats the first two games, 15-13 and 15-8, but the Cats rallied to win the third game 17-15 before the Cavaliers ended the match with the winning game going 15-7. Senior Megan Weiskircher led Kentucky in kills with 15, while freshman Candace Cogan recorded 12 digs to lead the team. Weiskircher and Cogan also led the team in service aces with two apiece.
Leading the Cavaliers in kills was freshman Paige Davis who recorded 22 for the match. Davis found a double-double as she and senior Katie Jones had 16 digs each.
Both teams had 63 digs for the match and Kentucky led Virginia in kills, recording 64 to the Cavalier’s 60. Kentucky also led in total attempts (180), while Virginia only had 165.
The Cats finished third overall and junior April Barnhorst was named to the All-Tournament team.
Next up for the Wildcats will be intra-state rival Louisville on Tuesday, Sept. 5 at 7 p.m. at Memorial Coliseum.
