(Sept. 14, 2000) — The 12th-ranked University of Kentucky women’s soccer team will take on Xavier on Friday, Sept. 15, at the UK Soccer Complex at 7 p.m. There will be a presentation at 6: 50 p.m. to commemorate UK coach Warren Lipka’s 100th career win, as well as the program’s 100th victory.
The series with Xavier is knotted at 3-3-1. The Wildcats won the 1999 meeting, 3-1.
“It is always a regional rivalry and the team members know each other and their opponent’s abilities,” Lipka said. “Again, Xavier is very well organized and after two losses in California, the Musketeers will be ready to break out.”
Xavier (1-4) is led by Annette Gruber in goals (2), points (4), and shots (15). XU goalkeeper Megan Veith has 27 saves for the year.
Kentucky (5-1) is coming off a 4-0 shutout of Ohio. The Wildcats remain on top of the Southeastern Conference’s Eastern Division and is led in points by Keri Boyce (11) and Annie Gage (8). Gage could break the school record for career assists in this game. She currently has four on the season, 18 in her career. The current recordholder is Miami of Ohio assistant coach Kim LaBelle with 19. UK plays Miami on Sunday, Sept. 17.
Boyce and Gage are both in the top five in the SEC for assists, while UK goalkeeper Beth Wells is tied for the SEC lead with two shutouts. She also ranks in the top five in goals against average (.83). Kentucky leads the conference in shots with 133 and is in the top three for team points, goals and assists. The 44 shots the Cats took against Ohio is a SEC single-match high.
