(Sept. 28, 2000) — This weekend, the University of Kentucky will play host to its only fall tournament of the season, the 3rd annual Charles Fluitt Collegiate Classic at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex, September 29 to October 1.
The tournament features six teams, all of which qualified for the 2000 NCAA Championships. Taking part in this year’s Fluitt Classic is Baylor, Fresno State, Harvard, Notre Dame, Tennessee and Kentucky.
The tournament is held in honor of the late Charles Fluitt, the father of former Wildcat tennis standout Marcus Fluitt. The elder Fluitt was a victim of the 1996 Valu-Jet plane crash in the Florida everglades.
“This tournament has quickly become a first-rate event,” said Ford Lankford, UK associate coach and tournament organizer. “I’m sure Mr. Fluitt would be pleased with the outstanding level of play that will be on display this weekend.”
Play will be a dual-match of eight singles and four doubles matches. Awards will be given to the winner of each flight. A percentage of wins will be used to determine the champion of each flight.
The tournament begins Friday at 1 p.m. when Harvard takes on Fresno State. Kentucky begins play on Friday at 7 p.m. when it takes on Notre Dame.
