The 16th-ranked University of Kentucky women’s soccer team was defeated by Tennessee, 3-2, Sunday, Oct. 15, at the Tennessee Soccer Complex. This is the first win of the series for the Lady Vols, which now stands 4-1.
The Cats (11-4, 4-3 SEC) started the scoring in the 24th minute, as Elizabeth Ramsey took passes from Emily Oetjen and Susie Ledzianowski and put it into the net, past UT goalkeeper Kim Sgarlata. The Vols did not tie the score until the second half when Marie-Eve Nault sent the ball past UK goalkeeper Jo Fletcher off a Kelly Berrall pass in the 60th minute.
Tennessee (9-6, 5-1 SEC) scored another goal in the 66th minute to go up 2-1 on Kentucky. Laura Lauter Smith took feeds from Sharon Holmes and Tara Minnax to notch the goal. Kentucky would not back down though, as Christal Mattingly seized an opportunity on a breakaway just one minute later off assists from Jen Wilkinson and Ramsey.
The game remained tied as overtime loomed until Nault converted a Rachael Newkirk corner kick, heading the ball in with just 26 seconds left in the game to win 3-2.
