TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Kentucky cross country squads completedcompetition at the 2000 Southeastern Conference Championships on Monday, Oct.30, as the men finished ninth and the women finished 10th at the Harry Pritchett GolfCourse in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
The UK women improved on their 12th-place finish in 1999 with strong effortsfrom freshmen Amy Guard and Caitlin Phillips in the 6,000-meter run. Phillips andGuard had run first and second, respectively, for the Cats this season, but Guard wasable to outrun her teammate to cross the line in 22:20.92 for 20th place. Phillips wasless than 15 seconds behind for 25th. Rounding out the scoring for the Cats weresenior Liz Attig, junior Jennifer Osterhage and freshman April Eaves.
The Wildcat men pulled out a ninth-place finish on the 8,000-meter course behindsophomores Hunter Spencer, Jack Morgan and Thomas Morgan. Spencer crossedthe finish line in 27:11.28 for 38th place, while the Morgan brothers finished 42nd and49th. The Cats also received points from sophomore Kevin O’Connor and freshmanJustin Amason.
Arkansas repeated as SEC champions in both the men’s and women’s raceswith five Razorback men and three women finishing in the top 10. This is the 10thconsecutive title for the UA men and the third straight for the women. UK’s womenfinished with a team score of 221, two points behind No. 9 South Carolina, while themen scored 245 points.
The Cats next meet will be the NCAA Southeast Regional Championships onSaturday, Nov. 11, in Greenville, S.C. It is the same course where the Cats ran theFurman Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 14, a meet the men won.
