University of Kentucky women’s golf sophomore Rachel Lester moved into a three-way tie forfirst place on Tuesday, Nov. 7, following the second round of the Pine Needles Women’s CollegiateChampionships in Southern Pines, N.C. Lester shot a 1-under par 70 in the second round to bringher tournament total to 144. The Kentucky squad held tight in third place after shooting a 300 onTuesday to move their two-round total to 599, just four strokes out of first place.

South Florida and Alabama are currently tied for the overall lead, while Campbell’s LauraTorrisi and South Florida’s Fany Schaeffer are tied with Lester for the individual lead. Also finishingin the top-10 was UK junior Towa Okiyama, who notched a 2-over-par 73 on Tuesday to bring hertotal to 147 and tie her for seventh place.

Other UK golfers participating in the event include senior Jenny Throgmorton, who tallied atwo-round score of 153 to tie her for 25th place and sophomore Kelly Anders, who is tied for 30thwith a 155. Rounding out the Lady Kats’ team lineup is junior Kristen Pepe, whose two-round 163ties her for 51st.

Freshman Eva Gessner, who is competing in the event as an individual, shot a two-day total of165 to tie for 53rd place.

“The team has really played well in the past two rounds,” Coach Bettie Lou Evans said.”Rachel had a remarkable day on the course to move into first place. I’m looking forward to finishingstrong tomorrow.”

The event wraps up on Wednesday, Nov. 8 with a 9 a.m. shotgun start. This is the final event ofthe fall season for Kentucky.
