Miami, Fla. – Coming off a 60-58 win over Florida International, the Kentucky women’s basketball team look to continue their winning ways in the Sunshine State when they take on the Miami Hurricanes on Tuesday, Dec. 19 at 7 p.m. in the Knight Sports Complex. This will be the teams first meeting in 10 years.
Kentucky (3-5) hasn’t met the Hurricanes (3-3) since an 80-68 decision in the National Women’s Invitational Tournament inAmarillo, Texas on March 23, 1990. The Cats also met the Canes earlier that season on December 9, defeating them 80-71. UKleads the all-time series 4-0.
“We had a good workout today but we have to keep up our intensity level,” UK Coach Bernadette Mattox said. “We are hopingto get SeSe back but I thought we had some players step up in our last game and really pull through for us.”
Freshman Kristin Connolly nailed the game-winning three-pointer versus the Golden Panthers while freshman Dasieka Hawthornenotched a team-high 12 points and four assists. Junior LaTonya McDole came off the bench to score 10 of 11 points in the secondhalf and recording four steals. She was named the Most Valuable Player, her second MVP award this season.
Helm, who has missed the Cats’ last two games due to a partial MCL tear in her left knee, continues to lead the Cats in scoring with13.3 points per game. McDole follows with 11.3 ppg and sophomore guard Rita Adams averages 10.0 ppg.The Hurricanes are led by freshman center Chanivia Brouggard who leads with 10 points a game. Miami defeated South Florida inits last game 73-51. Brouggard led with 14 points.
Following Tuesday’s game the Cats will meet Cincinnati on Dec. 22 at 6 p.m. in Louisville’s Freedom Hall. The UK men’s teamversus Indiana will follow at approximately 8 p.m. One ticket allows entrance to both games.
