Coach.JPG Despite a season-high team score, the University of Kentucky gymnastics team could not overcome a strong Michigan team,falling to the Wolverines, 193.800-196.325, on Friday, Jan. 26, at Memorial Coliseum. UK’s record drops to 0-3, while UMimproves to 6-3.

“We are very disappointed in our performance tonight,” Coach Leah Little said. “We know we are a better team than we areshowing. We need to compete with more aggressiveness and assertiveness. Our gymnasts are improving each week, but they are stillmaking falls. You can’t go against the No. 5 team and make those mistakes.”

The GymKats began the night on their strongest event, the vault, and were led by junior Jennifer Simmons’ second-place 9.800.Freshman Julie Joy improved again, scoring a career-high 9.775, followed closely by sophomore Julia Gore and senior BethColeman, who each tallied a 9.750. UK’s total of 48.725 was just a hair behind the Wolverines’ 48.775.

Smith.JPG UK went to the uneven bars next, tallying a 48.025. Gore led the way in this rotation, tying a career high with a 9.825 for thirdplace on the apparatus. Junior Katie Toups followed her with a 9.800, while Junior Jessie Lemp and Joy contributed solid 9.750scores.

The beam has been a trouble area for the GymKats this season, and tonight was not much different as they had to count onefall. Sophomore Mindy Smith continued her dominance on the apparatus tallying a first-place score of 9.875, completing here 13thmeet without a fall. Junior Nicole Allen earned fourth-place honors with a career-high 9.825. Lemp completed her first performanceon the beam this season with a 9.750, helping UK earn a 48.200 as a team.

Primault1.JPG The GymKats closed out the evening with the floor exercise, where they earned their top team score of the night with aseason-high 48.850. Gore led the way with a 9.825, as Coleman, Smith and Joy each scored a 9.775. Joy’s score was a newcareer-high.

In the all-around competition, Gore stepped up with some solid scores to finish with a season-high total of 38.925, good forthird. Michigan freshman and former US Olympian Elise Ray was well on her way to claiming the title, but a fall on the beam droppedher back to fourth.

The GymKats return to the mats on Friday, Feb. 2, at they welcome Southeastern Conference rival Georgia to MemorialColiseum. Also competing in UK’s first quad meet of the season will be George Washington and Radford. Action gets underway at7:30 p.m.
