Riding the wave of a near upset over No. 2 Alabama last week, the No. 26 University of Kentucky gymnastics team travels toGainesville, Fla., on Friday, March 2, for a quad meet that includes No. 8 Iowa State, No. 10 Florida and Ball State. Action at theStephen C. Connell Center gets underway at 7 p.m.
UK (2-6, 0-4 Southeastern Conference) is coming off a narrow 0.075 point defeat at Alabama where they scored thesecond-highest team score in school history and set a beam school record with a score of 49.350. Highlights included six individualcareer highs, with four on the beam. Sophomore Mindy Smith became only the second GymKat to score a 9.925 on the apparatus,and only moments later, fellow sophomore Melanie Zaharias matched it. Junior Nicole Allen and freshman Aronda Primault alsocontributed to the stellar team effort with career-high 9.850s. Freshman Julie Joy added a 9.850 on the floor exercise and Primaulttallied a 39.125 to win the all around.
Florida (5-7, 1-3 SEC) plays host for the fourth time this season and is ranked 10th in the GymInfo national rankings with a195.690 regional qualifying score. The Gators are returning from a two week hiatus after suffering a 196.475-195625 loss at LSUon Feb. 16.
Iowa State (5-3, 2-2 Big 12) is coming off a 196.525-196.150 defeat at the hands of No. 14 Minnesota. However, theCyclones’ team RQS of 195.735 has them ranked No. 8 in the nation.
Ball State (4-5, 2-3 Mid-American Conference) is ranked No. 30 with a 194.060 RQS. The Cardinals are coming off of afourth place finish at the Spartan Invitational hosted by Michigan State, scoring their second lowest total of the season (193.075).
