(Mar. 20, 2001) — University of Kentucky men’s tennis senior Edo Bawono has been named the Southeastern Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week, it was announced Tuesday, March 20, by the league office. Bawono, who leads the team at the No. 1 singles position, notched wins over two ranked opponents last week for the honor. It is the first for the Jakarta, Indonesia native and the first for the team this season.
No. 85 Bawono started out his senior campaign on a hot streak, winning 12 matches in a row while compiling a 13-2 fall record.He anchors the singles lineup and has tallied a 10-5 mark in spring play, 10-4 in dual-match play. Last week he was dealt a tough lossto No. 8 Jean-Julien Rojer when the Cats traveled to top-ranked UCLA before rebounding with a win over No. 11 Ajay Ramaswami ofLSU in Baton Rouge, La. He also charted a win over Southern Alabama’s Christian Thall, the nation’s 75th-ranked player, in Mobile.
“I’m very proud of Edo and all that he has been able to accomplish in his senior season,” Coach Dennis Emery said. “Hecontinues to provide much-needed leadership and sets an example for this team to follow.”
The Cats’ tough schedule has forced them to a 7-8 record on the season, but the team looks to rebound on Friday, March 23 whenthey travel to Columbia, S.C., to take on the 39th-ranked South Carolina Gamecocks. The Cats return to their home courts on Sunday,March 25, when they play host to No. 29 Florida at 2 p.m. at UK’s Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex.
