GuyMorriss.JPG First Practice Under New Coach: Coach Guy Morriss held his first practice as head coach ofthe Wildcats Monday afternoon at the Nutter Training Center.

Several dozen fans, a horde of media, and unseasonably cold weather greeted the Wildcats. Dressed in helmets, jerseys, and sweat pants, the team worked out for two hours and 15 minutes. Theoffense began learning the adjustments to the UK attack while the defense began practicing theeight-man front being installed by new defensive coordinator John Goodner.

“I had plenty of butterflies in my stomach,” said Morriss when asked about his emotions onbeginning his first practice as head coach. “Once the whistle blew I settled down and it was just X’sand O’s after that.”

Morriss said he would spend most of the first week with the offensive line.

“Once we get everything taught to the linemen, I can turn it over to John (graduate assistantcoach John Schlarman) and spend more time with the other groups,” Morriss said.

Notes From the First Practice:

Asked about the quarterback competition between sophomore Jared Lorenzen and redshirtfreshman Shane Boyd, Morriss said, “We’ll pick the quarterback who can move the ball and assume aleadership role with the team. We’ll evaluate it every day, but we’re not in any hurry to name aquarterback. It might not be until two-a-days.”

Regarding changes to the offense that will affect the quarterbacks, Morriss said, “We’ll begoing back under center. We’ll have shorter drops (dropbacks), and the ball will come out quicker.”

Senior center Nolan DeVaughn returned to practice after missing most of last season becauseof a knee injury. “Nolan moved around OK,” Morriss said. “We’ll have to see how his knee holdsup.”

Senior cornerback Jeremy Bowie returned to the practice field after sitting out last season. “Jeremy’s chances are good,” Morriss said. “The year away helped him mature. Coming into springpractice, he tested better (during the team’s physical testing) than any of our defensive backs.”

Junior tight end Bobby Blizzard sat out today’s practice with a back strain and hopes to returnby next Monday.
