(Apr. 7, 2001) — The 24th-ranked University of Kentucky womens tennis team made good on its attempt to get back on the winning track with a 6-1 win over the Auburn Tigers in a pivotal Southeastern Conference match at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex on Saturday, April 7. The win lifts the Cats to 11-8, 5-5 in the SEC.
The Wildcats came out solid despite windy conditions to take the matchs first point by winning two of threedoubles matches. Nineteenth-ranked Brooke Skeen and Lauren Rookledge, along with 23rd-ranked CarolinaMayorga and Sarah Witten, rolled to 8-3 victories at the No. 1 and 2 doubles positions respectively to grab UKthe early lead.
In singles action it was much of the same as Mayorga, Rookledge and Jill Buckley all notched straight set winsto clinch the match for the Cats. Skeen and Witten would later add victories to make the final count 6-1 infavor of UK.
“Auburn is a great team,” Coach Mark Guilbeau said. “They are showing a lot of character by playing sotough through the adversity that they have faced this season.”
“Auburn came out and gave us quite a challenge today,” Assistant Coach Kathy Herring said. “We met thechallenge head on and came out with a victory.”
The Cats will be back in action on Wednesday, April 11, when they travel to Columbus, Ohio take on the27th-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes. The match is slated to begin at 2:30 p.m.
