Women's Golf

(Apr. 6, 2001) — The University of Kentucky women’s golf team stands at sixth-place following the opening day ofcompetition of the Bryan National Collegiate tournament in Greensboro, N.C., on Friday, April 6. The Lady Kats shot a first-round total of 306, one stroke behind fifth-place Furman and 17 strokes behind leader Duke.

Oklahoma State’s Linda Wessberg leads all individualsafter notching a three-under-par 69 in the openinground. Senior Jenny Throgmorton and junior TowaOkiyama lead the way for Kentucky with first-roundtallies of 76, which tie them for 17th-place enteringSaturday’s second round.

Also competing for Kentucky are sophomores RachelLester and Kelly Anders, who are tied for 26th placewith scores of 77, and junior Kristen Pepe, whosefirst-round score of 80 places her tied for 52nd.

The Lady Kats continue competition in the 17-teamtournament on Saturday and conclude competition at theBryan Park Champions Golf Course on Sunday with an8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
