The University of Kentucky baseball team extended its winning streak over intra-state rival Louisville to three games with an 8-3 victory over the Cardinals on Tuesday night at Cliff Hagan Stadium.
Seth Morris went 3-for-4 at the plate and belted his team-leading ninth home run of the season to pace the UK offensive attack, while Bryan Felkel and Mark Michael held the U of L offense at bay. With the win, UK improved to 15-20 on the season. U of L fell to 20-19 on the campaign.
U of L got on the board with one run in the first inning. Scott Gerlachs sacrifice fly scored Mike Hook, who had singled to leadoff the game.
The Wildcats evened the contest with a run in the bottom half of the first. Gordon Tylers two out double plated Spencer Graeter, who had singled then stolen second base, but Caleb Brock was gunned down at the plate attempting to give the Cats a lead.
UK plated a run in the second on an RBI single off the bat of Brad Pickrell.
The Cats struck again in the third when Vince Harrison blasted his fifth home run of the season over the left-center field wall, giving UK a 3-1 lead.
Beau Moores fifth inning single drove home two more Wildcats and chased U of L starter Mike Tisdale from the game.
The Cards would battle back with two runs in the top of the sixth, one run coming on a Mike Budak single, the other on a Fernando Isa ground out, cutting the UK lead to 5-3.
Morris solo homer would extend the Wildcats lead to 6-3 after six innings.
UK would add two insurance runs in the eighth. Morgan Embrys double down the right field line scored Tyler. With one out, Moore singled in pinch-runner Brent Stephens, making the final tally 8-3.
Felkel improved to 2-0 on the season, going five full innings, giving up five hit and two earned runs while striking out three Cards. Michael picked up his first save of the year, third of his career, by tossing four innings, giving up five hits and no earned runs.
Morris and Tyler were the only Cats to record multi-hit games. In addition to his home run, Harrison was spectacular on defense, racking up nine assists.
Tinsdale was saddled with the loss. He fell to 6-4 on the season.
Dave Williams Jr. led the Cards with three hits. Budak, Kevin Fishback and Adam Haley each had to hits apiece.
The Cats return to action tomorrow when they travel to Oxford, Ohio, for a game with the Miami Redhawks. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
