Adam Chiles, a 6-1 guard from Ballard High School in Louisville,Ky., has signed a national letter of intent to play college basketball atKentucky, Coach Tubby Smith announced today.
Chiles led the Bruins in scoring this past season, averaging 16.1points per game while playing only 23 minutes per game. He also chippedin 4.5 rebounds, 5.1 assists and 3.1 steals per contest as Ballard wasranked No. 1 in the state for most of the season and as high as thirdnationally by USA Today.
“We’re happy to have Adam join our UK family,” Smith said. “He’san outstanding young man who’s had an outstanding scholastic career atone of the premier high school programs in the country.”
Chiles shot 54.0 percent from the field and 38.0 percent fromthree-point range in leading the Bruins to a 32-2 record and the regionalfinals this past season. As a junior, he averaged 14.1 points per game asBallard advanced to the region semifinals. In his sophomore campaign,Chiles was a key reserve, averaging 8.5 points per game as the Bruinscaptured the 1999 Sweet 16 Championship. In the three seasons with Chileson the roster, Ballard owned a 90-13 record.
“He’s a real tough young man with great leadership skills,qualities that will greatly benefit our program,” Smith added.
Chiles, who played for Coach Chris Renner at Ballard, letteredall three seasons, scoring 1,293 career points, which ranks 12th on theschool’s all-time list. As a senior, he was a first-team All-Stateselection by both the Louisville Courier-Journal and the LexingtonHerald-Leader and a second-team pick by The Associated Press. He alsoearned all-tournament team honors at the King of the Bluegrass, the BeachBall Classic and the Louisville Invitational.
Chiles, the first student-athlete from Ballard High School tosign with the Wildcats, joins Bowling Green’s Josh Carrier, Oak Hill’s(Va.) Rashaad Carruth and Modesto (Calif.) Christian’s Chuck Hayes inKentucky’s 2001-02 freshman class.
Smith Statement on Stone
Coach Tubby Smith has issued the following statement concerningMarvin Stone’s public intoxication charge issued last weekend in Lexington:
“Marvin was already under suspension from the team due toacademic reasons. He will remain on suspension and his status will bereviewed at the end of the school year.”
