May 25, 2001 – University of Kentucky assistant coach Meghan Burke announced today her resignation from the women’s basketball program to become an assistant coach at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond.

Burke, 26, has spent the last three seasons with the Wildcats, assisting head coach Bernadette Mattox in coaching, on-campus recruiting, and scouting activities. She also served as the assistant camp director.

“I see the job at EKU as a great opportunity to advance my career and gain valuable experience not only in coaching, but in off-campus recruiting as well,” Burke said. “I am excited about this new challenge but at the same time I will really miss my Wildcat family. I want to thank everyone at UK, especially Coach Mattox, for having a positive impact upon my life. I have had a tremendous experience at UK and wish the team and the coaching staff the best of luck.”Burke, a native of New Haven, Conn., came to UK in July of 1998 from Lynn University in Boca Raton, Fla., where she served as an assistant coach for one year while pursuing her MBA in Sports Management. Before working at Lynn, she worked as an assistant coach at Southern Connecticut State where she began working on a master’s degree in physical education/exercise science.

“This is an exciting opportunity for Meghan,” Mattox said. “This is a chance for her to become an active recruiter and gain experience to move on as a head coach, her ultimate dream. We are really going to miss everything Meghan brought to our program, her energy, her knowledge of the game. She is going to do a great job for Eastern and we wish her the best of luck.”Mattox has not set a timetable for replacing Burke. Burke’s collegiate days were spent at St. John’s University, where she was a four-year letterwinner and starting center for the Red Storm under then-coach Joe Mullaney, Jr.

Burke will begin her duties at EKU under head coach Larry Joe Inman on June 1.
