Wildcats Scrimmage: The Kentucky football team held its second scrimmage of the preseason Wednesday afternoon at the Nutter Training Center.
The first-team offense played the second-team defense and vice versa. The scrimmage lasted 61 plays and there appeared to be no significant injuries. Today’s scrimmage came on the first day of classes for UK, ending almost two weeks of two-a-day practices by the Wildcats.
“We got accomplished what we needed today, which was more live tackling for the defense,” Coach Guy Morriss said. “The big thing I saw was that the players were tired and their concentration was not where it needs to be. We need to start getting the players fresher. We’ll do that by having fewer collisions in practice.”
Morriss also stated that he plans to announce the starting quarterback choice on Monday. Sophomore Jared Lorenzen and redshirt freshman Shane Boyd each spent time with the first and second teams during the scrimmage, with Lorenzen getting the majority of the snaps with the first unit.
Lorenzen had a 28-yard touchdown pass to Derek Abney and a beautiful 65-yard bomb to Ernest Simms for a touchdown. Boyd had a nine-yard TD toss to Aaron Boone and an eight-yard TD to Abney while directing the first team. Sophomore running back Chad Scott continued to shine in the running game.
“I thought our passing game looked pretty sharp,” Morriss said. “Derek Abney had a good afternoon, and so did Aaron Boone.”On defense, the first team did a good job handling the second-team offense. The defense did a good job putting pressure on the quarterback. Senior cornerback Jeremy Bowie had an interception for the first team and senior free safety Nigel Smith had a pickoff for the second team.
The Wildcats return to the practice field Thursday and Friday at 2 p.m.
Kickoff Luncheon Slated for Aug. 24: The annual Kentucky Football Kickoff Luncheon has been scheduled for Friday, August 24, at 11:45 a.m. at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in the Patterson Ballroom.The cost is $40 per person or a table of 10 may be reserved for $400. Tickets may be purchased in advance at the UK Ticket Office in Memorial Coliseum. Tickets also may be purchased at the luncheon. Coach Guy Morriss is the featured speaker and a new retired jersey honoree will be announced.
