The second annual University of Kentucky vs. University of Louisville Golf Challenge will take place at the University Club of Kentucky in Lexington this Friday, Aug. 31, at 1 p.m.
Members from both athletic departments will compete in the two-person team match play. Headliners participating include UK’s Larry Ivy, Tubby Smith, Gay Brewer, Johnny Owens and Buddy Harston against U of L’s Tom Jurich, Rick Pitino and Ted Schultz. In addition, the men’s and women’s golf coaches at both schools will participate while 60 fans of each University have registered to play.
“This is a great opportunity for fans from both teams to have some fun on the golf course while kicking off the football season with a friendly rivalry,” UK Director of Golf Bettie Lou Evans said.
The event also will mark the opening of the U-Club’s new driving range facility. The headliners listed above will christen the new range with a simultaneous tee shot at 12:30 p.m.
The inaugural Golf Challenge was held last year prior to the UK-U of L football game at Lake Forest Country Club in Louisville. Proceeds generated annually will benefit the men’s and women’s golf teams at both schools.
Kentucky opens its 2001 football season against Louisville in Commonwealth Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 1, at 12:30 p.m.
