The Kentucky men’s soccer team welcomes UNC Asheville to the UK Soccer Complex for a 2 p.m. match on Sunday, Sept. 9.
The Cats (1-1-1) are coming off a 2-2 tie with No. 13 Ohio State on Friday night that saw UK twice come back from a one-goal deficit. Junior John Monebrake, a transfer from OSU, scored the equalizer in the 87th minute to send the game to overtime.
Senior Ilkka Jantti leads the team in goals (one) and assists (two), tallying his second assist of the season against OSU on UK’s first goal. Although the Cats have been outshot 32-17 on the year, they are equal with their opponents in goals scored with four. Along with Jantti and Monebrake, senior Chris McAlpine and sophomore Chris Soler have scored a goal this season.
The Bulldogs (2-1-0) dropped their first match of the season to Army, 2-1, on Friday. Sophomore Will Matthews leads the team with nine points on four goals and one assist, and has scored at least once in all three UNCA matches. Freshman Matt Jacobs is second on the team with five points (two goals, one assist). UNCA has outshot its opponents by a 32-30 margin but have outscored them 10-4, including a 7-1 triumph over Warren Wilson College.
Admission to all UK men’s soccer matches is $5 for adults, $3 for senior citizens and students up to eighth grade, and free for UK students with an ID.
