Sept. 17, 2001
Returning to the field after the cancellation of its games this weekend, the 20th-ranked University of Kentucky men’s soccer team dropped a tough match to Xavier, 3-1, on Monday, Sept. 17, at the UK Soccer Complex.
In a match added to the schedule last Friday to make up for the cancellation of the UK/Traditional Bank Classic, the Cats (2-2-1) came out with fire and dominated play in the early going. Nathan Fleetwood put UK on top in the 21st minute on an assist from Ilkka Jantti for his first goal of the season, giving Jantti his team-leading fourth assist of the year.
But it was all Musketeers (1-4-0) after that. They increased their offensive pressure and tied the game at one at the 34:22 mark on a Tiest Sondaal score. Then in the 72nd minute Logan Wallace tallied the game-winner, and just eight minutes later with the offensive-minded Cats pushing forward for the tying goal, Alex Schick got past the defense and in a one-on-one battle with UK goalkeeper Brad Samelko floated the ball over Samelko’s outstretched arms for an insurance goal.
On the night, the Cats outshot XU 8-6 with a 10-4 corner-kick advantage.
UK returns to action when they travel to Kalamazoo, Mich., to face Western Michigan on Friday, Sept. 21. Game time is slated for 3 p.m.
