Several University of Kentucky women’s tennis doubles teams opened the 2001-02 season by taking their respective flight championships at the University of Tennessee St. Mary’s Health Care Classic on Saturday, Sept. 22. Three of four Wildcat duos walked away from the annual tournament with titles.
Senior Carolina Mayorga and junior Sarah Witten, the nation’s 10th-ranked team, won the Doubles Flight One title by defeating fifth-ranked Alison Ojeda and Crystal Cleveland of Tennessee by a score of 8-6 in the finals. Senior Lauren Rookledge and junior Leigh Bradwell, the nation’s 38th-ranked pair, took the Doubles Flight Two Championship with their win over Marlene Mejia and Aniela Mojzis of North Carolina. Junior Shannon Stafford and freshman Danielle Petrisko defeated North Carolina’s Caroline Hill and Kristin Koenig for the Doubles Flight Four title.
In singles action, Witten and Bradwell, along with Petrisko, advanced through the semifinals to earn a spot in the final matches of their respective flights. Championship matches for each singles flight will take place Sunday, Sept. 23, at the UT Varsity Tennis Courts.
