No. 10 KENTUCKY TO HOST TRADITIONAL BANK INVITATIONAL
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The 10th ranked and unbeaten University of Kentucky women’s soccer team will play host to the Traditional Bank Invitational this weekend, Sept. 28-30, at the UK Soccer Complex.
Furman will face New Mexico in the opening game on Friday at 5 p.m., followed by Kentucky vs. Arizona State at 7:00 p.m. The tournament will conclude on Sunday as Furman battles Arizona State at 11 a.m. while the Wildcats entertain New Mexico at 1 p.m.
“Two out of the three teams coming in this weekend, Furman and Arizona State, are teams that advanced to the NCAA Tournament last year,” UK coach Warren Lipka said. “We have two West Coast teams playing a couple of East Coast teams. These match-ups of different styles of play will be entertaining for people to come out and see.”
Kentucky is off to its best start in the program’s 10-year history at 7-0-0 (1-0-0 Southeastern Conference). This past week, the Wildcats chalked up three wins as they defeated Murray State, 4-1 (9/17), Utah, 3-0 (9/21), and Ohio State, 2-0 (9/23). Senior midfielder Suzie Ledzianowski scored her fourth goal in as many games and senior defender Annie Gage amassed her 27th career goal in the Cats’ win over the Buckeyes.
Gage, who already owns UK’s career assist record with 29, needs only one goal to move into a second-place tie with Carrie Staber (1995-98) on the UK career goals list. Kim LaBelle sits atop the career goals scored chart with 44 from 1994-97. Senior goalkeeper Beth Wells has recorded four shutouts on the season and has totaled 18 in her tenure at Kentucky, trailing Carrie Kuhnell by five shutouts on the UK career list. Kuhnell garnered 23 shutouts in the UK net from 1995-98.
“Were building on each and every game,” Lipka said. “That’s what we planned on doing in the beginning, to just get better every time we step on the field. That’s the kind of path we want to take – it’s all falling into place and our next step is this Friday night.”
UK is currently ranked 10th nationally by Soccerbuzz.com and at No. 12 by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/adidas Coaches Poll.
