No. 24 KENTUCKY PLAYS HOST TO No. 20 GEORGIA IN 200TH GAME
Game between Cats and Dogs also marks the 100th at the UK Soccer Complex
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The 24th ranked University of Kentucky women’s soccer team (8-3-0/2-1-0 Southeastern Conference) resumes SEC play on Friday, Oct. 12 as it plays host to No. 20 Georgia(7-2-1/2-0-0 SEC) at 7 p.m. The match between the Wildcats and Bulldogs marks the 200th game in the 10-year history of the UK women’s soccer program and the 100th at the UK Soccer Complex.
“I’m excited to be a part of this milestone in the program and the successes we’ve been able to achieve over the past 10 years,” UK coach Warren Lipka said. “We hope to continue to add to our accomplishments this weekend as we face two top-20 teams, Georgia and Tennessee, at home.”
The Wildcats have compiled a 64-32-3 (.662) home record over the past decade. In its inaugural game on Sept. 5, 1992, UK defeated Wisconsin-Milwaukee 5-2 in overtime at the UK Soccer Complex. Kentucky was shutout in its 100th match, 1-0 by Wisconsin in the Kentucky Invitational Tournament on Nov. 1, 1996.
Georgia is riding the crest of a five-game win streak into Friday’s game and has outscored its opponents 15-3 in that span. Freshman goalkeeper Ashley Lindley was honored as the SEC’s Player of the Week for Oct.1-7, allowing no goals to penetrate the UGA net while saving 10 shots in three starts for the Bulldogs.
“There is no doubt that this game will be physical and intense,” Lipka said. “It’s that point in the season where each game can make or break you as post season implications are on the line – the athletes on both sides of the field understand that.”
Kentucky will complete the weekend slate by welcoming No. 19 Tennessee (5-4-0/1-1-0 SEC) to the UK Soccer Complex on Sunday for a 3 p.m. match. The game is the second half of a doubleheader as the UK men’s soccer team plays host to Buffalo at 1 p.m. in a Mid-American Conference contest.
