LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Kentucky swimming and diving teams will dive back into the pool on Friday, Oct. 19, in Knoxville, Tenn., as they take on Tennessee and LSU in a tri-meet at 2 p.m.
Both Wildcat teams currently sit at 0-2 after competing in the SEC East Challenge in Gainesville, Fla., Oct. 11-14. The men’s team fell 132-110 to South Carolina and 129-110 to Florida during the weekend and then placed fifth at the SEC Invitational. Joey Faltraco was one of the bright spots for the men during the SEC East meet weekend as the sophomore moved into second on UK’s all-time list in the 200 backstroke and sixth in the 100 backstroke. Junior All-American Clayton Moss also had an impressive weekend, winning the three-meter diving competition.
The women were defeated 123.50-108.50 by the Gamecocks and 128-93 by the Gators and placed fifth at the invitational. Sophomore Shawna Sechrist was UK’s top finisher in the 50 freestyle and 200 backstroke against UF while freshman Marci Vrooman tasted victory in the 500 freestyle and was a member of the second-place 400-freestyle relay squad against USC.
At the SEC East Challenge, the UT men’s team (1-0) placed first at the invitational and defeated South Carolina 148-89. The women (1-0) swam to a third place finish during the invitational and claimed a 142-100 victory over USC.
The LSU women are currently 2-0 after claiming victories in 14 of 16 events against conference-foe Arkansas their last time out. This will be the first competition for the Tiger men.
Last season, both the UK men and women collected victories over the Tigers as the men were victorious 134-116 and the women 128-114. Both UK squads also finished one place ahead of LSU at the 2001 SEC Championships. Tennessee claimed victories over both Wildcat teams last season, defeating the men 110-74 and the women 142-101. The UT men placed second at the 2001 SEC Championships while the women finished fifth.
The Wildcats will resume action Nov. 3, when they host intra-state rival Louisville in a dual meet at 11 a.m. in UK’s first home meet of the season.
