KENTUCKY PLAYS HOST TO INDIANA ON SENIOR NIGHT
Six seniors to play final game at UK Soccer Complex
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Kentucky women’s soccer team (11-6-0/5-4-0 Southeastern Conference) will play its final regular-season match as it plays host to Indiana (7-7-1/3-6-1 Big Ten) on Friday, Nov. 2 at the UK Soccer Complex at 7 p.m. Seniors Aimee Brown, Melinda Buemi, Annie Gage, Susie Ledzianowski, Kate Qually and Beth Wells will be recognized before the game with Senior Night ceremonies beginning at 6:40 p.m.
“I want to thank the six seniors for all their hard work and dedication, not only on the field but off the field as well,” UK coach Warren Lipka said. “They’ve sacrificed time and effort to build our program and they’ve been able to see the results of their hard work with the successes we’ve had over the past four years.”
Brown (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin), a 2001 team captain, was a tenacious defender, starting in 79 of 80 career games in her four-year career. Buemi (Westerville, Ohio/North) anchored the Wildcat defense for four seasons, starting in 74 of 75 games played, while earning All-Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll status in 1999 and 2000. Gage (Westerville, Ohio/South) will finish her career as one of Kentucky’s most illustrious players. Voted one of three team captains this season, she owns UK career records in both assists and shots. Setting the single-season goal record of 15 as a sophomore in 1999, she followed up by tying the single-season assist mark of 11in 2000. Gage was awarded first-team All-SEC honors in 1999 as she shattered UK’s single-season points record that year with 39.
Ledzianowski (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor), another Wildcat captain, was voted to the All-Freshman Great Lakes Region team by Soccer Buzz Magazine in 1998 and was named to Soccer Buzz’s Elite Team of the Week for Sept. 17-23 this season. Qually (Delta, B.C./South Delta Secondary), a transfer student to UK in 1999 from San Diego State, has played in 72 career games and has recorded 12 goals and 10 assists in her career. Wells (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) sits atop the UK all-time goals against average list, posting a 1.04 for her career and was named the SEC Player of the Week this season for the week of Sept. 17-23.
By defeating Auburn last Sunday, the Wildcats clinched a berth into the SEC Tournament in Baton Rouge, La. UK, the fifth seed of the eight-team field, is only one of two SEC teams (Vanderbilt) to participate in all nine SEC Championships.
The Cats will face the loser of Friday’s Tennessee-Georgia game in the first round of the tournament on Thursday, Nov. 8. Game time is to be announced.
